She became a leading actress firstly in French cinema with her role in the successful André Téchiné directed drama Rendez-vous, then gained international acclaim for her portrayal in The Unbearable Lightness of Being (1988), and won a César Award for Best Actress and the Venice Film Festival for Best Actress for Three Colors: Blue (1993). She won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in The English Patient (1996). Other most notable performances include Les Amants du Pont Neuf (1991), Damage (1992), Chocolat (2000), Caché (2005), The Flight of the Red Balloon (2007), and Certified Copy (2010) for which she received the Best Actress Award at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival, making her the first actress to win the European "triple crown".
