New Oil Absorbent Exchange Center Available for Long Beach Boaters
SACRAMENTO – A new oil absorbent exchange center is now providing free and convenient ways for the Long Beach boating community to recover, collect, and recycle oil. The Boating Clean and Green Program and Santa Monica Bay Restoration Foundation announced the opening of the center, which aims to prevent contaminants from entering the marine environment.
“The cumulative effect of small oil spills into our waterways has a serious impact on the aquatic environment,” said California Department of Boating and Waterways Director Raynor Tsuneyoshi. “A pint of oil can produce a slick of approximately one acre on the water’s surface and one gallon of oil can ruin a million gallons of drinking water.”
Boaters are invited to participate in the opening celebration of the exchange center July 18 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Alamitos Bay Marine located at 205 Marina Drive in Long Beach. They will receive information about how the program works and how to obtain free oil absorbents. Boaters will also receive a free recycled cotton tote bag “boater kit” that contains information about clean and safe boating practices.
Funding for the oil absorbent exchange center was provided to the Santa Monica Bay Restoration Foundation from a California Integrated Waste Management Board grant. The event is being hosted by the Santa Monica Bay Restoration Foundation and the California Department of Boating and Waterways and the California Coastal Commission’s Boating Clean and Green program, in partnership with the City of Long Beach.
