Coast Guard: Slack cable caused chopper crash

From:  ap.org
A slack cable triggered a chain of events that ended with a fatal helicopter crash during rescue exercises off Hawaii last year, the Coast Guard said Friday. All four crew members on board were killed. The accident occurred while the helicopter practiced lifting a rescue basket from a Coast Guard lifeboat about five miles south of Oahu. The report said the hoist cable went slack due to the motion of the hovering helicopter and the small boat in the waves. The extra slack formed a loop that... Read Full Story

SHAKING IN THEIR SHELLS Why Lake MeadÕs quagga mussels should fear this fish

From:  lasvegassun.com

RESEARCHER SEES FOE AS ÔSO SMARTÕ

From:  lasvegassun.com
David Wong came to Las Vegas to try to save it from an alien invasion. The native of China has been working as a researcher at UNLVs School of Community Health Sciences since July 2008 for one reason because Southern Nevada is where the war to end all wars must be waged against quagga mussels, the little freshwater mollusks that threaten to clog and poison the regions water systems. Wong has for 15 years studied the effects of invasive mussel species in the United States. During the eight... Read Full Story

Promising, patient research

From:  lasvegassun.com
Scientists and lake managers in several states are trying everything from power washers to electric jolts to kill or at least manage quagga mussels. So far, the thumbnail-sized, tough-shelled mussels — discovered nearly three years ago in Lake Mead — are winning. But UNLV biologist David Wong is working with other researchers on a promising new weapon: the redear sunfish. Distinguished by a red mark on its sides, this particular sunfish is nicknamed Òthe shellcrackerÓ and has a proven... Read Full Story

USCG Marine Safety Performance Plan Specific Safety Initiatives—improve commercial fishing vessel safety

Commercial fishing continues to be one of the most dangerous occupations in America. The industry also faces severe economic pressures, including depleted stocks and limits on fishing, increasing fuel and other costs, and prices that have stagnated since at least 2000. This fosters an attitude of greater risk tolerance that can lead to less emphasis on training, safety equipment, and maintenance. The Coast Guard has pursued improvements in safety in the commercial fishing industry since... Read Full Story
