Today, karate is known primarily as a hard style striking art, featuring linear punches, blocks, kicks, knee/elbow strikes and open handed techniques. However, soft style punches and blocks, grappling, joint manipulations, locks, restraints, throws, and vital point striking are often an inherent part of many karate styles.
I have very strong feelings towards this subject, Karate instructors or Martial arts instructors in general have a MASSIVE responsibility upon their shoulders, but some do not take this responsibility anywhere near as seriously as they should. Several years ago one of the black belts at our Dojo decided he was going to enter a competition. We all knew what was going to happen, he would lose in the first round. He was a great Karateka ! his techniques were focused, strong and fast. Every time he executed a technique it was like it was his last. I put together this bunch of clips so I could get a look at how different forms of karate executed a basic take-down (nage- waza in Jananese). When I started training (many, many moons ago), it was in Shotokan Karate. And, being a very hard Japanese style (Okinawan origins), it focused almost exclusively on the linear techniques.

I am often surprised by how many kata a shodan (1st degree black belt) will know in different Karate systems, including my own. When I ask a shodan how many kata he knows, the answer will often be, "all of them." This is often said with the connotation of, "why all of them, of course." Like why would I even ask? Should a shodan know all the kata of a system or ryuha of Karate? I know that this is up to the Sense.
