A community portal about Karate with blogs, videos, and photos. According to Wikipedia.org: Karate is a martial art of Ryūkyūan origin. The word "karate" comes from kara, meaning empty, and te meaning hand. Karate has a rich and diverse history of development, incorporating countless influences from other martial arts and cultures. Today, karate is known primarily as a hard style striking art, featuring linear punches, blocks, kicks, knee/elbow strikes and open handed techniques. However, soft style punches and blocks, grappling, joint manipulations, locks, restraints, throws, and vital point striking are often an inherent part of many karate styles.

Hollywood continues its non-stop 1980s nostalgia fest with a remake of the Karate Kid. The new version, starring Jackie Chan in the wise teacher role immortalized by Pat Morita and Jaden Smith (Will Smith's son) in the role of the bullied outsider, doesn't look entirely terrible, but it doesn't have the same suburban scrapiness of the original. I mean c'mon, the kid trains on the Great Wall. How can a humble Japanese-American war vet top that...

The trailer for the upcoming remake of The Karate Kid has hit. This is a film facing more than its share of obstacles. Having the audacity to not only remake this long-beloved classic, but also make the (generally fan-unfriendly) move of casting the 11 year-old son of Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith, there's no doubt it has some major PR work ahead, working up to its June 11, 2010 release. We've been dreading the arrival of The Karate Kid movie ever since the project was first announced last year.
