A community portal about Karate with blogs, videos, and photos. According to Wikipedia.org: Karate is a martial art of Ryūkyūan origin. The word "karate" comes from kara, meaning empty, and te meaning hand. Karate has a rich and diverse history of development, incorporating countless influences from other martial arts and cultures. Today, karate is known primarily as a hard style striking art, featuring linear punches, blocks, kicks, knee/elbow strikes and open handed techniques. However, soft style punches and blocks, grappling, joint manipulations, locks, restraints, throws, and vital point striking are often an inherent part of many karate styles.

Several years ago one of the black belts at our Dojo decided he was going to enter a competition. We all knew what was going to happen, he would lose in the first round. He was a great Karateka ! his techniques were focused, strong and fast. Every time he executed a technique it was like it was his last. The great Karateka Terry O'neill , always says, you must be able to switch on and off at will. Well, this black belt could certainly switch on and off at will, he would die rather than lose, a very hard man to stop. The ... Read Full Story

I have very strong feelings towards this subject, Karate instructors or Martial arts instructors in general have a MASSIVE responsibility upon their shoulders, but some do not take this responsibility anywhere near as seriously as they should. Karate or martial arts instructors are in a very strong position of influence, the kids look up to their Sensei or teacher, they want to reach the coveted Black Belt and in some cases will do anything the Sensei or instructor says. When I was competing I saw many Sensei or instructors, from different karate Dojo and martial art schools, some were fantastic role models, but unfortunately ... Read Full Story

When people ask me what karate Dan grade I am, I always respond with the same answer, DESPERATE DAN! Many years ago, in ancient China, oh! Sorry, I’m getting carried away here. I'll start that again, several years ago I attended a seminar in London, England, there was a selection of Japanese Karate masters, all were brilliant. There were hundreds of Karate practitioners, all ages and all grades. The Dojo captain shouted, 'Line up' and we all moved to where we thought our Karate Dan grade equivalents would be standing. I remember looking towards the top of the line and there were some awesome ... Read Full Story

The core class is our Unarmed Combat-Self Protection - Threat Response - Street Fighting system. This is a set of drills students practice with each other. There is no punching and kicking the air, though we do incorporate shadow boxing. There is no hard oriental "discipline", we train in a relaxed and friendly manner. There is no bowing, we prefer a smile and a handshake. There is no half hour "warm up", just some basic stretching. This is not an aerobics class or a yoga class, it is a Martial Arts skills class. You spend your time building skills. This is real time one-on-one ... Read Full Story

Come join me in watching Will Smith’s son Jaden and Jackie Chan in The Karate Kid remake, won’t you? Forget that it’s set in China and karate is a Japanese martial art and that the karate in this movie was changed to kung fu yet the title still remains The Karate Kid. Also, forget that ...

The trailer for the remake of 'The Karate Kid' is out. It's quite a reimagination of the 80s classic. The kid is Jaden Smith, Will Smith's 11-year-old son. The martial arts master is Jackie Chan, but he teaches Jaden Kung-Fu, not karate. And the movie is set in China. 'The Karate Kid' is set to open June 11, 2010. Did you know they were remaking The Karate Kid? Only, instead of Ralph Macchio, (or Hillary Swank), it stars Will Smith's kid. And they got Jackie Chan for the Pat Morita part. And they moved the whole movie to Beijing. It certainly looks remake-y. [ Subscribe to the comments on this story ]
