Kate Winslet Awarded $40,000 in Tabloid Libel Suit

Kate Winslet does not appreciate being called the "World's Most Irritating Actress." That's why she sued the Daily Mail this spring after the UK tabloid wrote a whole article about how vain she is, and how she lies about her workout regimen. It may seem like a trivial point in the grand scheme of celebrity gossip, but since Winslet has made women's body image an issue close to her heart, she wanted to set the record straight.

According to PopEater, Kate filed a suit claiming the story "injured her personal and professional reputation" and made her feel "distressed and embarrassed." The Daily Mail settled for $40,000 today.

Following the decision, Winslet released the following statement: "I am delighted that the Mail have apologized for making false allegations about me. I was particularly upset to be accused of lying about my exercise regime and felt that I had a responsibility to request an apology in order to demonstrate my commitment to the views that I have always expressed about body issues, including diet and exercise. I strongly believe that women should be encouraged to accept themselves as they are, so to suggest that I was lying was an unacceptable accusation of hypocrisy."
