Shocker: The 'Dawson's Creek' Writers Almost Screwed Everything Up by Having Joey End Up with Dawson
Thank goodness they came to their senses.
TV love triangles can be a very tricky business, and here’s proof that sometimes the powers that be almost get things very, very wrong.
During a panel at the AXT Television Festival on Saturday, seven Dawson’s Creek writers reunited to reminisce and reveal some secrets about the hit ‘90s series. Series creator Kevin Williamson was joined by co-showrunner Paul Stupin, Jenny Bicks, Rob Thomas, Gina Fattore, and Anna Fricke, along with panel moderator and writer/EP Julie Plec.
Among other interesting tidbits (Jack’s coming out poem was inspired by an event from Greg Berlanti’s real life and everyone really regrets the awful Pacey stockbroker storyline), the panelists revealed that Joey was originally going to end up with Dawson instead of Pacey in the series finale. Ummmm…what?!
"It was clear to us that it was she and Dawson who would wind up together," Stupin recalled. Thankfully, everyone eventually came to their collective senses and realized that Pacey Witter was the only real choice. "Halfway through, Kevin calls me and says, 'I changed my mind,'" Stupin continued.
Williamson further elaborated, "Dawson seemed like the obvious answer and once I got into writing the first hour... This isn't what the show set up to be. Maybe that's where it started but it evolved and it ended up as something else. I wanted it to be a twist on the teen genre but also wanted it to be surprising, honest and real and say something about soul mates and what soul mates can be. That's why we did it that way. When you left the show in that last moment, they're a family and everyone got what they wanted. There was fulfillment and they were all happy."
Williamson joked that his mother hated him for choosing Pacey over Dawson, but I think I speak for just about everyone when I say: Thank GOD you chose Pacey. Pacey and Joey were a phenomenon and are generally regarded as one of the best TV couples of all time. Honestly, what were you even thinking with the idea of Joey ending up with anyone other than Pacey?
After all, he bought her a wall:
And he said the sweetest things to her:
And the kisses guys, THE KISSES:
And also, he remembers everything:
Thanks for not screwing this one up, Dawson's Creek writers.
