Five North Korean artists have been banned from entering Australia for an exhibition of their work, the government said Wednesday, drawing accusations of censorship from the arts community. The artists and a translator have been refused visas because they are from a studio linked to North Korea's leader Kim Jong-Il, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said. "The studio reportedly produces almost all of the official artworks in North Korea, including works that clearly constitute propaganda aimed at glorifying and supporting the North Korean regime," a spokesman told AFP. "To make an exception in this case would have represented a relaxation of Australia's ... Read Full Story

North Korean mothers who work at street markets are publicly voicing anger over the communist state's shock currency revaluation despite the fear of arrest, a South Korean report said Tuesday. Chosun Ilbo newspaper quoted informants in the North as saying that mothers who have to work at markets to feed their children are openly expressing anger at last week's currency change, which wiped out most of their savings. "Marketplaces have turned into stages for denouncing (leader) Kim Jong-Il," a resident was quoted as saying. "Mothers in despair are tough and defiant. They huddle together at markets and openly curse government authorities, despite the risk ... Read Full Story
GENEVA (Reuters) - The United States pushed Monday for more scrutiny of human rights conditions in North Korea, telling the U.N. Human Rights Council that it is now impossible to verify claims of abuses in the isolated communist state. "The lack of remedies or transparent accountability in dealing with allegations of abuse makes it difficult for foreign governments to accurately assess the human rights situation," U.S. ambassador Robert King told the Geneva-based body. The 47-member Human Rights Council is reviewing North Korea this week for the first time as part of its universal periodic review process, which was launched in 2006 to assess human ... North Korea Friday hailed efforts to build a strong socialist economy but kept silent about its shock currency revaluation which has reportedly sparked fury and frustration. "Today the Korean people, showing their mental power of self-regeneration and fighting against hardships, are making strenuous efforts to build a strong, prosperous and powerful socialist nation," the official Korean Central News Agency said in a commentary. It painted a rosy picture of the economy's future, underlining the public's supposed unity and self-reliance. Analysts say Monday's revaluation appears aimed at clamping down on a fledgling free market economy in an attempt to tighten the communist regime's grip. Observers ... Read Full Story

A group of activists and North Korean defectors urged an international tribunal Thursday to investigate alleged human rights abuses in the North and put its authoritarian leader Kim Jong Il on trial. The group is to fly to Hague next week to file its petition calling for an investigation at the International Criminal Court, the first such move on the North Korean rights issue, lead activist Ha Tae-keung told reporters in Seoul. "Our aim is to get the arrest warrant on Kim Jong Il to be issued," Ha said. "North Korea's crimes against humanity are no less serious than Sudan's." In March, the court ... Read Full Story
