Billy Elliott Scores a Record-Tying 15 Tony Nominations

New York (May 5, 2009)- “Billy Elliott” nailed down 15 Tony Nominations, tying “The Producers” for the most Tony nominations in history.

Besides Best Musical, “Billy Elliott” is also nominated for: Best Direction, Best Orchestrations, Best Lighting, Best Sound Design, Best Costume Design, Best Scenic Design, Choreography, Best Original Score and Best Book.

“Next to Normal,” with 11 nominations, will be going head-to-head with “Billy Elliott” in most categories.

“Shrek” scored a surprising eight nominations, while “9 to 5” garnered only four nominations.

In the non-musical categories, “Mary Stuart” and “The Norman Conquests” tied with seven nominations each, while “God of Carnage,” esarned a Best Play nomination along with acting nominations for all four of its cast members.

Among the big names earning nominations: Angela Lansbury, Jane Fonda, James Gandolfini, Stockard Channing, Allison Janney and Jeff Daniels.

The Tony Awards ceremony will be held on June 9.
