METALLICA’S KIRK HAMMETT PICKS DENGUE FEVER SONG FOR DECADE’S BEST LIST Though slightly bizarre at first glance (but we think it’s absolutely fantastic!), Metallica’s Kirk Hammett has chosen the song “One Thousand Tears of A Tarantula” from Cambodian-American band Dengue Fever for his Rolling Stone magazine Best Music Of The Decade Ballot. Selected the #2 song of the decade in order of importance, “Tears” sits between Radiohead’s “Everything In Its Right Place” and Mastodon’s “Oblivion” Dengue Fever’s music is a combination of classic Cambodian pop, Ethiopian jazz and Bollywood blitz, with lyrics mostly sung in lead singer Chhom Nimol’s native language of Khmer. “One ... Nobody puts Kirk Hammet’s guitar in the corner. Funny enough, while listening to Kirk Hammett regain his guitar hero status on “Death Magnetic,” I sat almost in the exact same spot Hammett sat in the “Some Kind Of Monster” documentary, which chronicled the chaos of Metallica making their last record “St. Anger.” It was in that spot that Hammett argued with drummer Lars Ulrich and producer Bob Rock that their then-new practice of writing songs without guitar solos was, um, not to Hammett’s liking. Arguing against the notion that guitar solos were “dated” Hammett ended up being dead-on when he said not having guitar ... Read Full Story

Audio CD (August 12, 1991) Original Release Date: August 12, 1991 Label: Elektra / Wea Called "the Black Album" by many (due to its monochrome cover), Metallica marks the group's entrance into the mainstream, with shorter songs, simpler song structures, and slower tempos overall. That said, this is an excellent album, featuring some of the best songwriting Metallica has ever done. "Enter Sandman," "Wherever I May Roam," and "God That Failed," despite being slower and more groove-oriented than the band's earlier work, feature the same heavy riffs and heavier rhythms that have always been a feature of Metallica's music. The band goes introspective with ... Read Full Story

Today's San Francisco home isn't just a piece of celebrity real estate, it's a before and after. We first checked out the home of Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett in 2006 when it was listed at $12.5 million. At that time the Georgian home in Pacific Heights was so decked out in velvet and wine colors that one commenter called it the "Shady Rest Funeral Home." Even the kitchen was red. The home disappeared off the market but now as the Wall...
