After losing to Mayor Bloomberg in last week's mayoral election but winning a moral victory by not getting destroyed Bill Thompson has quickly become a local star of the Democratic Party. He's even being floated as a potential primary challenger to Senator Kirsten Gillibrand. Who knows if that'll happen, but if you thought Obama was snubbing Thompson before, watch out. The snubbing he'll get if he runs against the intently protected Gillibrand will make the first snubbing look like a... Read Full Story
Meet U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY), who recently argued on the Senate floor against what she described as discriminatory practices in health care coverage of women:
"According to the data compiled by the National Women's Law Center, under the current system, a 25-year-old woman pays up to 45 percent more for the same or identical coverage. Some of the most essential services required by women are not covered by most insurance plans, such as child-bearing, pap smears or mammograms... Read Full Story
New York Gov. David Paterson keeps sinking in the public's opinion, and the junior senator he appointed is stuck in the middle. Democrat Kirsten Gillibrand (KEHR'-sten JIHL'-uh-brand) has to avoid getting sucked down by the governor's low ratings without appearing ungrateful to the man who plucked her from obscurity to replace Hillary Rodham Clinton. Gillibrand is unique among New York Democrats because she can't easily distance herself from Paterson. Other Democrats are already doing so in... Read Full Story
Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand says New York has been unable to spend nearly $97 million in federal stimulus dollars allocated for day care centers because a federal agency has not issued adequate guidelines on how to spend it. The Democrat asked Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius in a letter to take quick action so the money can be spent. The affected day cares fall under the Child Care and Development Block Grant Act of 1990, which was designed to help low-income families... Read Full Story
When it comes to next year's primaries, three senators probably are feeling a lot like Rodney Dangerfield: They can't get any respect. As veteran lawmakers, Sens. Arlen Specter, D-Pa., and Jim Bunning, R-Ky., should be coasting, under normal circumstances, to the general election. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., appointed in January as Hillary Rodham Clinton's successor, has the White House's backing. Yet each has party challengers clamoring for a primary fight in 2010. That's unusual in... Read Full Story

Gillibrand was appointed in January to fill the seat vacated by Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's appointment as... Read Full Story
Over the weekend, Towleroad captured two strong videos from someone who's becoming our biggest champion in government, U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY). One's a speech and the other's an interview. Both are extremely promising. Watch 'em here:
In this world there exists a Kirtsen who has made out with a tights-clad Tobey MaGuire, who has starred in a campy film about teen beauty pageants, and who once stated Jake Gyllenhaal. And yet this is the Kirsten who's quickly becoming a... Read Full Story
If a Vietnam Vet was exposed to Agent Orange while on the ground, the government will cover him for any health expenditures for related maladies. But if the Vet was serving, e.g., in the air or on a ship, that coverage is not available .
Veterans have turned to Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., who has vowed to pass legislation to change the loophole that denies the coverage. She said she hopes to get it through committee and onto the Senate floor soon.
Condon recently visited the place... Read Full Story
