The Univercell Vijay Awards 2008 turned was a grand affair with Kollywood stars, director, producers and technicians attending the grand event on June 13th at the Nehru Indoor stadium. The annual film awards show for Tamil Cinema was a received well in 2006 and 2007 and the award has gained immense popularity, since the awardees are chosen by a voting system by Tamil cinema followers across Tamil nadu and Pondicherry.

Surya’s Vaaranam Aayiram seems had the mass appeal and happened to be the movie of the night, as it bagged the three out of five favorite categories which are choosen by tamil movie fans across the state .  Vaaranam Aayiram won best film, best director (Gautham Menon) and best song (Anjala) awards.

The awards doesn’t stop there, the jury members chose Surya as the best actor for his role in Vaaranam Aayiram while Simran bagged the best supporting actress for the same film and Harris Jeyaraj for his brilliant music score. Nenjukul Peithidum song in Vaaranam Aayiram won the best playback singer award for Hariharan and best lyricist award for Thamarai.
