Since it introduced the death penalty 40 years ago Kuwait has executed more than 70 people, most of them convicted for drug smuggling or murder. The first drug-related executions were in 1998 when two Iranians found guilty of smuggling heroin were hanged. US President Barack Obama said Monday he wants to build on already "very strong" relations with Kuwait, during a meeting with the Gulf emirate's monarch.
Obama praised Kuwait for hosting US forces involved in operations in Iraq and said the country would play an important role as he winds down the war and begins withdrawing troops.

KUWAIT CITY, March 19 (UPI) --
The emir of Kuwait Wednesday dissolved the National Assembly and called for new elections.
The action taken by Emir Sheik Sabah al-Ahmad al-Sabah followed this week's resignation of Prime Minister Sheik Nasser Mohammad al-Ahmad al-Sabah and the rest of the Cabinet, Kuwait Times reported.
The newspaper said the country's Constitution provides for a new parliament to be elected within two months and that May 18 or 19 were likely dates.
