Kyle Sampson is the Justice Department aide who resigned over the firings of U.S. attorneys. He was forced to appear before a Senate committee, but he claimed to "not remember" many of the answers to questions asked. However he did say that the lawyers weren't fired based on their professional performance, but instead because they weren't supporting President Bush's political agenda.

Kyle Sampson wrote an email ( which has been released to the public here ) detailing his logic behind recommendations to remove certain US attorneys for political reasons. His revealing email had the following classifications for attorneys: "Bold = Recommend retaining; strong U.S. attorneys who have managed well, and exhibited loyalty to the president and attorney general. "Strikeout = Recommend removing; weak U.S. attorneys who have been ineffectual managers and prosecutors, chafed against administration initiatives, etc. "Nothing = No recommendation; have not ... Former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales defends Attorney General Eric Holder's decision to investigate allegations of prisoner abuse by the CIA . Earlier today, former Attorney General John Ashcroft admitted at a Conservative Political Action Conference that civilian trials for terrorists have "use and utility." Sam Stein on Huffington Post points out that the statement "throws a wrench in Republican talking points" which lately have dismissed the civilian justice system as irrelevant to the war on terror. But Ashcroft is hardly the first Republican to acknowledge the civilian courts...

For most people, former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales is a national embarrassment, a pimple on the ass of American history. But to hear him tell it, the man George W. Bush called "Fredo" is a victim of partisan warfare. And the lesson he apparently learned in Washington is not that he politicized the Bush Justice Department, but that he didn't politicize it enough. Those are among the head-shaking takeaways in a brief but revealing...
