Eagles at Redskins: Can Philly Stop Portis?

Filed under: , , , ,

To get you ready for week 10, FanHouse is previewing all this week’s NFL games. Here is your Philadelphia Eagles-Washington Redskins preview.

2007 Records:

Philadelphia Eagles: 3-5 (4th in NFC East)
Washington Redskins: 5-3 (3rd in NFC East)

Last Game(s):

Cowboys 38, Eagles 17
Redskins 23, Jets 20 (OT)

When the Eagles have the ball: This should be interesting. The Redskins run defense has been very good and the Eagles have gone back into a running funk: if they can’t run, they can’t win. The matchup of Brian Westbrook against the Redskins linebackers (especially London Fletcher) should be great. With all of this, the Eagles will most likely look to the air, where the Redskins have struggled of late. They’ve lost Carlos Rogers for the year, Fred Smoot has had a hamstring injury and Shawn Springs has been playing as his dad has been in a coma. Philly doesn’t have outstanding receivers, but have some burners who can beat the Skins’ secondary for big plays.

When the Redskins have the ball: Joe Gibbs said he was going to run the football and he did just that. Clinton Portis is coming off his best game and biggest workload of the weekend. The Eagles will try run blitzes to try to bump Portis (and Ladell Betts) outside … where the Eagles’ linebackers and ends must make plays. As for the passing side, the Redskins have been very bad. If not for Chris Cooley, there is no passing game. However, in the week one matchup between these two, WR Santana Moss came up big.

The Edge: The Redskins’ corners did an outstanding job at being physical with the smaller Eagles’ receivers back in Week 2. This disrupts the timing and allows the Redskins pressure more time to get to Donovan McNabb. The key will be those corners ability to play that man coverage and allow those blitz packages to be called.
