It's official, Lance Armstrong has announced his return to cycling. In a video blog posted Tuesday, Armstrong confirmed he was coming out of retirement and would return to the Tour de France in 2009.

The 36-year-old cyclist has been retired for three years, and in that time he's enjoyed eating and drinking whatever he wants, relaxing and high profile relationships (with Sheryl Crowe and Kate Hudson). So why would Armstrong, who has already won the Tour seven times, want to give that life up?

He says his comeback is an attempt to raise global awareness for cancer. "It's now time to address cancer on a global level," he said in his video blog.

Armstrong, who was diagnosed with testicular cancer that had spread to his lungs and brain in 1996, was saved by surgery and cycles of chemotherapy. Since then, he's been a vocal advocate for cancer research, even starting his own organization that has raised hundreds of millions of dollars for cancer awareness and survivorship programs.

The details of Armstrong's comeback, such as team and training schedule, will be announced September 24 at the Clinton Global Initiative in New York City.
