Perry Fewell wasted no time making changes on his first full day as the Bills interim coach, picking Ryan Fitzpatrick to be the starting quarterback. The decision to go with Fitzpatrick over Trent Edwards was announced shortly after the team's practice Wednesday as the Bills (3-6) prepare to play at Jacksonville (5-4) this weekend.  

Buffalo left tackle Demetrius Bell hurt his knee Sunday against Tennessee, knocking him out of the rest of the game with the Titans. When Bell was hurt near the end of the first half, a team spokesman didn't know which knee the left tackle hurt. No other details were immediately available except that the first-year tackle would not return.  

Resigned to missing the playoffs for his ninth straight year in Buffalo, defensive end Aaron Schobel questioned the Bills lack of direction with seven games remaining in their season. Rookie Bills safety Jairus Byrd likes to remind his father, former Chargers defensive back Gill Byrd, that he intends to one day have more interceptions in the NFL. Jairus never mentioned anything about trying to do it all in one season. "No, I didn't give him a timetable," Byrd said, referring to his father, who had 42 interceptions during a 10-year career that ended in 1992.

Simmons is an eight-year NFL veteran who joins the Bills (3-7) after being released by New England on Nov.  

A day later, Perry Fewell shuddered when recalling how difficult it was seeing Bills rookie guard Eric Wood writhing in pain on the field after breaking two bones in his left leg. David Garrard had just three game-winning drives in his first 58 career starts. Now, he has two in the last two weeks. Garrard threw a touchdown pass to Mike Sims-Walker with 56 seconds remaining and Jacksonville beat the Buffalo Bills 18-15 Sunday, spoiling Perry Fewell's debut as interim coach and giving the Jaguars their first three-game winning streak in nearly two years.

Bills linebacker Keith Ellison's season is over after he was placed on injured reserve with a quadriceps injury. The move was announced Friday as the Bills prepare to play Jacksonville on Sunday. Interim coach Perry Fewell was not available for comment, and had not mentioned the move was imminent when he issued the team's injury report following practice.  

Buffalo's Marcus Stroud has been ruled out because of a knee injury, meaning the NFL's worst run defense could be without both starting defensive tackles against Jacksonville this weekend. Kyle Williams has missed three games because of a knee injury, and was listed as questionable by interim head coach Perry Fewell on Friday.  

Quarterback Brian Brohm rejected an offer to stay in Green Bay in order to pursue a fresh start in Buffalo with a team that's suddenly losing confidence in Trent Edwards. The Bills plucked Brohm off the Packers' practice squad on Thursday, signing the 2008 second-round draft pick to a two-year contract.  

Buffalo Bills tight end Shawn Nelson will not play in Sunday's game against the Carolina Panthers. The Bills downgraded the rookie tight end to out on Saturday. Nelson sustained a concussion in last week's 16-13 overtime win over the New York Jets. Earlier this season, Nelson missed the Bills' loss to New Orleans because of a strained shoulder.  

A quick peek of the box score and you'd think it was impossible the Buffalo Bills won. They were outgained almost 3-to-1, had only nine first downs and had a nearly 10-minute deficit in time of possession. Then you see the stat that decided the game and defined Jake Delhomme's miserable season with Carolina: turnovers.  

First, Roscoe Parrish couldn't persuade the Buffalo Bills to trade him. Now, the NFL's leading punt returner has more reason to be unhappy because he can't even get on the field. Careful in saying he didn't want to "bad-mouth" coach Dick Jauron after practice Thursday, Parrish questioned the team's decision to strip him of his punt-returning duties by leaving him...

The Bills announced that Edwards had suffered a blow to the head, and coach Dick Jauron confirmed it was concussion after the game.  

Rex Ryan fumed after the New York Jets' defense failed to stop Miami and its wildcat formation Monday night, calling the unit's performance an "embarrassment." He was still angry the following day, making it clear he wasn't taking the 31-27 loss lightly. "It's blunt-force trauma," Ryan said of his criticism of the team.

Things might finally be looking up for the Bills injury-riddled defense. After losing one starter after another, the Bills were buoyed after safety Donte Whitner and linebacker Paul Posluszny (pahs-LUHS'-nee) returned to practice Wednesday. Both have a chance to play Sunday, when Buffalo (1-4) plays the Jets (3-2).  

Bills coach Dick Jauron is concerned about the severity of the leg injuries sustained by linebackers Kawika Mitchell and Marcus Buggs that further deplete Buffalo's already banged-up defense. "I'm not optimistic about those injuries," Jauron said after both were hurt in a 6-3 loss to Cleveland on Sunday.  

If the Cleveland Browns' decision to trade mercurial receiver Braylon Edwards was one of addition by subtraction, Terrell Owens did the math and came up with a far different answer. "Hey," the Buffalo Bills receiver said, "maybe we'll have a chance to win this weekend." T.O.  

Buffalo Bills defensive tackle Kyle Williams won't return against Carolina after leaving in the first quarter with a knee injury. Williams was questionable going into Sunday's game with a sore shoulder, but was active and got the start. He hurt his knee on the first defensive series and walked to the locker room.  

Bills defensive end Ryan Denney neglected to inform his mother Sheri about the big surprise he had in store when he took the field for Buffalo's game at Miami last weekend. Taking part in the NFL's "Crucial Catch" campaign to promote breast cancer awareness, Denney wore pink cleats in a personal nod to his mother, who is a breast cancer survivor.  

Carolina Panthers leading tackler Thomas Davis is inactive against Buffalo because of a hamstring injury. Starting fullback Brad Hoover also didn't dress for Sunday's game because of lingering back pain. The Bills had starting defensive tackle Kyle Williams available after he was listed as questionable with a shoulder injury.  

For a team that's supposed to be in a state of crisis after a dreadful start to the season, the surprisingly upbeat Buffalo Bills don't look the part.
