A School Where One Size Doesn't Fit All

Educator Hopes to Create Student-Centered Model By Jay Mathews - Thursday, July 17, 2008; Page DZ03 - Washington Post Staff Writer Growing up in Montgomery County , graduating summa cum laude from the University of Pennsylvania and getting a law degree from Harvard , Alan M. Shusterman had been called brilliant but didn't feel that great. He got a job in corporate law with a large Boston firm, but that didn't work for him, either. Gradually, he realized he wanted to teach children. After... Read Full Story

Project Shell in studio

From:  lynn.edu
On Friday, I had the opportunity to help out at the shoot in the studio. Angela Barioli, the secretary of the National Broadcasting Society, interviewed five students that had participated in a program called Project Shell (Soaring High in Language and Literacy), funded by the department of education. The students took classes at Lynn in secondary education, and also participated in after school programs teaching students who needed extra help in learning English as a second language. This... Speaking at Founders Day

From:  lynn.edu
I find it a privileged and an honor that I was asked to speak on behalf of the student body at Founder’s Day. Being so involved on campus on multiple levels and interacting with students on a daily basis I have the opportunity to really capture what occurs in the Perper Plaza on campus.  Every day it is utilized in a multitude of ways. Students read, skateboard, do homework, and we use the space often for programs. To see the large amount of people during the presentation was very... Read Full Story

The Truth about Phonological Awareness; Counsel for Home Schooling Parents and Educational Teachers

Brenda Geier, K-12 Reading Specialist teaches globally at http://www.childfont.com Phonological awareness is the ability to discern sound units smaller than a single syllable. It is imperative that children learn these small sound units at an early age and it is not an easy task. First, the letters of the alphabet must be learned, but the sounds of the letters must be taught next. Teach children as early as age 3 and 4 each individual sound that each individual letter makes. This process is... Read Full Story

Back to school…back to reality

From:  lynn.edu
It’s that time of year again: A new academic year, a new semester. It is my favorite time of year, I feel as though I’m at the starting line of a race. I have no idea what opportunities lie ahead of me, or what I may have achieved at the end of it; but I am excited to get on my jogging shoes and start running. As most of you may know, the first week of classes are basically just going over the syllabus and learning the foundation of what your classes may entail. Some of my classes... Read Full Story

Silence is golden

From:  lynn.edu
I am so sick and tired of people who don’t understand that a library means quiet! For those of you who are with me, I say we stand up for our rights! Last week I specifically made my way to the second floor of the library, to a quiet corner, where I proceeded to write a midterm paper. I went to the second floor, to escape from the noises on the first floor. Just as I was getting into my essay, I was disturbed by a ‘jabberer’! There she was, sitting in the lounge area, beside all the desks... Read Full Story

Changes, Changes, Changes!!!

When I'm really in the zone with my writing my brain works on the project at all times. The best evidence of this is when I've fallen asleep and I awake with an idea. That's been happening lately. And while I bitch about having to write so much to keep up with this ever changing industry - program closures, staff leaving and ending up elsewhere - new programs starting - the truth is I live for those moments because it means I've reached a certain plateau in my writing and the view is pretty... Creative Fiction Writing - Punctuation Concepts - Semi-Colon

When a Semi-Colon Doesn't Fit the Syntax A writer friend of mine, who'd had four books published by major houses at the time we were speaking, critiqued something I wrote in which I had used a semi-colon to set off a series in a section of comedy relief that read something like this: John wanted to own a farm, but without many common animals; namely, dogs, cats, cows, and horses. He suggested a colon for this sort of series, so the phrase would read: John wanted to own a farm, but without... Read Full Story

Writing Better Fiction - Beware when Action does Not Constitute Movement

Writing Better Fiction - Beware when Action Does Not Constitute Movement  One of the most serious issues facing many writers is the ability to maintain the action throughout the narrative. Unfortunately, the mere creation of a dramatic occurrence does not guarantee plot movement. The literary critic for The Palm Beach Post, Scott Eyman, has written many outstanding books on the legends of the cinema. In an article he wrote some years ago pertaining to a trend in film making that was...
