While she has recorded and performed extensively with jazz musicians, Billy Strayhorn, and Duke Ellington, she is usually not considered a jazz singer because she does not improvise. She currently lives in New York City and still makes public appearances. She might be best-known for her version of the song "Stormy Weather", which was a hit in the 1940s.

We’re going to start filming next year, and we’ve got Alicia, Oprah reportedly told the New York Post column during an interview for her film “The Great Debaters.”
You know what? I actually would have liked to have seen an unknown get and play this part. I just don’t see Alicia in this role. But we’ll see.
