In his first interview since suffering a compound fracture of his right leg against the Oakland Raiders, Jets running back Leon Washington expressed cautious optimism that he’ll be back next season. Washington suffered the injury during Sunday’s game against the Raiders after sustaining a lower leg injury during the first quarter. Washington was injured on a running play that lost seven yards when a defender rolled up on his right leg. He had to be helped off the field by two trainers, and was then carted off the sidelines. Leon Washington, the Jets’ dynamic running back/kick returner , skipped the first day of the Jets’ organized team activities Monday amid reports he’s unhappy with his current contract, which has a base salary of $535,000. Washington, 26, is entering the final season of his initial rookie contract. He reportedly is seeking a new contract that averages $6 million per season.
