Extremists are attempting to derail the introduction of a national swine flu vaccination campaign, the country’s top doctor has warned. Sir Liam Donaldson, the Chief Medical Officer for England, spoke out against protests aimed at deterring people from having the jab. A second wave of swine flu could be on its way, scientists warned last night after the number of new cases rose for the first time since July. The jump, from an estimated 3,000 to 5,000, comes a fortnight after children – key spreaders of the disease – returned to school. There have been outbreaks at six schools in England, but health chiefs repeated that there are no plans to close schools as it would do little to contain the disease. Medical experts have warned that swine flu could claim 65,000 lives in Britain unless the epidemic is stopped. It would be the worst case scenario based on 30 per cent of the population catching the virus, The Mirror quoted Chief Medical Officer Sir Liam Donaldson, as saying.
