A community portal about Libertarianism with blogs, videos, and photos. According to Wikipedia.org: In the United States, the term libertarian is usually associated with the free market philosophy of libertarianism. The first person to describe himself as a libertarian, however, was Joseph Dejacque, an early French anarchist communist. The word stems from the French word libertaire, and was used in order to evade the ban on anarchist publications, which were banned by law in France. In the context of the European socialist movement, libertarian has conventionally been used to describe those like Mikhail Bakunin who opposed state socialism.
Peter Thiel , the Silicon Valley entrepreneur and libertarian , wrote an obtuse essay for CATO , that normally would have gone unnoticed, except in libertarian circles which, being more like an all night dormitory BS session than a political movement, like nothing better than arguing philosophical nuance. But, Mr. Thiel pulled an Ann Coulter , and it stuck in the craw of the ladies of the blogosphere: “The 1920s were the last decade in American history during which one could be genuinely optimistic about politics. Since 1920, the vast increase in welfare beneficiaries and the extension of the franchise to women — two ...

As a way of making my contribution to Women's History Month , I have been highlighting the Libertarian Chick Triumvirate of Isabel Paterson , Rose Wilder Lane and Ayn Rand . But there is a fourth libertarian chick , who was a contemporary of the Triumvirate which gave birth to modern libertarianism , who is often forgotten—perhaps because feminists and leftists also consider her a hero. That would be Zora Neale Hurston . Leftist academians ask "Why does she seem so sensibly left-wing on some issues and so horrifically right-wing on others?" One second wave feminist got down right bitchy, charging Hurston with “a ...

Yesterday I was pleased, and more than a bit embarrassed, to get a comment from Dave Nalle of the Republican Liberty Caucus . I was embarrassed because, even though having spent a good amount of time over the past few years hanging with libertarians and other similar ne'er do wells—this was a group I had never heard of. They claim to be the only Republican group completely dedicated to the principles of libertarianism . As far as I know that is correct. Even though, as Ronald Reagan said “libertarianism is the heart and soul of conservatism” --it has been in short supply in the ...

The second personage of the Libertarian Chick Triumvirate is the grand duchess of liberty herself, Ayn Rand —who was a contemporary of fellow founder of modern libertarianism Rose Wilder Lane , whom I featured a couple days ago. The downside of Ayn Rand is the debating society, known as libertarianism , wastes unbelievable hours dissecting her novels , the nuances of objectivism , and the meaning and metaphysics of freedom —all of which distressingly obscures the clarity of Rand' s concept of Reason and Individualism as heroic virtues -- which is the whole point of her work The amusing thing right now is that ...

Jennifer Burns sits down with Reason.tv and discusses her book Goddess of the Market: Ayn Rand and the American Right, and Ayn Rand in general. Very good interview outlining how, though Rand despised Libertarianism, her work has continued to inspire Libertarian thought.
Freedom Democrats, a blog for libertarian Democrats, writes: "There's an underlying reason to why I always keep animal rights in my mind as a potential problem for libertarianism. The problem is not just an ideological challenge to libertarians saying that they don't have a system that has a place for animals. There is a political challenge of how libertarianism can adapt to a political system that will increasingly develop stronger sympathies...
While homeowners save money, the arrangement shifts nearly all the risk for the loans to the federal government — and, ultimately, taxpayers — at a time when Americans are falling behind on their mortgage payments in record numbers. ...
In response to a question today, I found a C-SPAN appearance from 2006 on their website. Host Steve Scully was teaching a class on “Issues in Media and Public Policy” with students at the Cable Center’s Distance Learning Studio in Denver. He asked me to join him for a discussion of libertarianism and public policy. For [...]
Commentary by those familiar with IP law is usually devoid of libertarian principle. Most IP experts are, unsurprisingly, proponents of the status quo, just as government school teachers tend to favor government schooling and astronauts cheer NASA. FULL ARTICLE by Stephan Kinsella
