A community portal about Libertarianism with blogs, videos, and photos. According to Wikipedia.org: In the United States, the term libertarian is usually associated with the free market philosophy of libertarianism. The first person to describe himself as a libertarian, however, was Joseph Dejacque, an early French anarchist communist. The word stems from the French word libertaire, and was used in order to evade the ban on anarchist publications, which were banned by law in France. In the context of the European socialist movement, libertarian has conventionally been used to describe those like Mikhail Bakunin who opposed state socialism.
To the individualist Lao Tzu, government, with its "laws and regulations more numerous than the hairs of an ox," was a vicious oppressor of the individual, and "more to be feared than fierce tigers. FULL ARTICLE by Murray N. Rothbard

Still Rhino--indeed. Canadian rightists hide behind libertarianism, which is a respectable philosophy, to promote a sexist, anti-union, anti-immigrant agenda.
True libertarians have no position on abortion, euthanasia, same-sex marriage, drug use and so on. These are matters of individual rights.
Play-libertarians like Iain G. Foulds use libertarianism to press a socially conservative position that opposes these freedoms. Hence they are...
Over at a Very British Dude, Jackart has written a rather good post about socialism and libertarianism. The post covers several aspects of the whole debate—not least countering the argument that "socialism has never been tried" (and The Nameless Libertarian makes some good additional points on this subject)—but it is on one crucial difference between libertarianism and socialism that I wish to comment. The real difference between libertarianism...
A discussion in the comments section of a post about blackmail brings up an issue about which many libertarians are confused. This concerns the idea of "harm." Libertarians often condemn "harming" others, and this is fine so far as it goes, if it is kept in mind that "harm" here is loosely meant as a synonym for aggression. But "harm" is really a broader category. Libertarianism says that only aggression may be countered with force, that...

In the Dallas Libertarian Examiner, writer Garry Reed responded to the
news of the recent founding of a Danish group calling itself Libertaere
Socialister, or Libertarian Socialists, with a column entitled "Calling
all Stalinist-Jeffersonian-Bozoian Libertarians", claiming that the
Danes had stolen the term "libertarian" from the Libertarian Right in
America, and that combining libertarianism with socialism made as much
sense as...
I just received (as in 20 minutes ago) a giant package in the mail with The Encyclopedia of Libertarianism published in 2008 by Sage and Cato, and edited by Ronald Hamowy with more contributors than I can possibly list (but they include many writers for Mises.org).
I must say that I'm completely blown away by it. It is 620 pages in a 2-column format, and the first glance shows that it is stunningly comprehensive and useful.
I turned first...

In this Wall Street Journal article, Heather Wilhelm argues that Ayn Rand is bad for libertarianism because her personal obnoxiousness and emphasis on the “virtue of selfishness” and celebration of a small entrepreneurial elite tends to alienate potential adherents. I too dislike some aspects of Rand’s personality and disagree with many parts of her philosophy. [...]

I saw this post at The Humble Libertarian today. It is an excellent statement on true independent conservatism and Libertarianism. True conservative and Libertarian values are often misunderstood in our current political atmosphere of baseless platitude from the far left and the mindless grunts of the far extreme right.
This link should hep to dispel any misconceptions of true independent conservatism and Libertarianism.
I hope you enjoy...

It’s a pleasure for me to be here at the Libertarian Party’s annual
general meeting, and I’d especially like to thank everyone for the warm
welcome I’ve received today.
I truly appreciate it.
You see I often promote ideas or views which rub people the wrong way, which in turn...
I've been thinking a lot lately about thankfulness. Many people do not know this about me, but I used to be a libertarian.
Like many teenagers, I was converted to a form of libertarianism by Ayn Rand. I was saved from that fate, not by God (that happened, but much later) but by a curious thing: gratitude.
I remember the exact moment I left libertarianism behind me: I was standing on the floor of the Davenport common room at Yale College...
The Yuma Sun's editor Terry Ross continues his move away from libertarianism to Obama dictatorship, particularly through government control of all of our medical needs.Ironically, the newspaper that editorializes for national health care also prints...
