Just moments ago, President Barack Obama signed his first bill into law. With a brief flourish of his pen (he's left-handed, by the way) Mr. Obama affixed his signature to the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Bill, then passed off the keepsake to Ledbetter as a posse of Government Officials nodded approval on the sidelines. The President noted that it was a historic moment. "I sign the Fair Pay Bill in honor of Lilly Ledbetter and those who came before her." With that, he added that new life had been breathed into a Constitution signed over two hundred years ago, which now guarantees an end ... Read Full Story

I hope none of our readers have forgotten who Lily Ledbetter is or what she has done. The equal pay advocate, a former Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. employee whose name is on federal equal pay legislation passed last year, joined celebrities Clint Eastwood, Raquel Welch, Leeza Gibbons and six other advocates in being recipients of the eighth annual Inspire Awards given by AARP. The Inspire Awards salute ten outstanding individuals “who are using their energy, creativity and passion to make the world a better place.” The 2010 honorees include Lonnie Ali (voice for Parkinson’s), Aida Giachello, (Latino health activist), Scott Hamilton (cancer crusader), ... President Obama signed the Lilly Ledbetter Fair-pay Ac t today--to help ensure women receive the same pay as men for the same work, by allowing extra time for a woman to sue her employer for wage discrimination. Oh, happy day! Ellen Bravo, of the Miami Herald , claims women in the U.S. made 76 cents for every dollar earned by men doing the same job in 2003. Other gender gap estimates put it at 75.5 cents per dollar (US Census Bureau) or as high as 83.8 center per dollar (US Department of Labor). That there has been any difference in wages in this country ... Read Full Story

Photo: Ledbetter, behind President Obama, looks on as he signs the law. Photo taken by Jason Reed of Reuters. I don't think Lilly Ledbetter ever thought she would go down in history as a pioneer. Much like Rosa Parks, Johnnie Carr, Madame C. J. Walker, and so many other great women. Today, President Barack Obama signed into law the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act of 2009 . Before putting his pen to the paper, Obama said: "Lilly Ledbetter did not set out to be a trailblazer or a household name. She was just a good hard worker who did her job -- and she ... D o ya think some of the carping from certain entitled women will forever be silenced now that #44's first legislative signature is for a step towards compensation equality? Probably not, but they'll look a little more ridiculous in the future. I received an email from Kristen @ MomRising with this photo of her and Lilly Ledbetter at the White House this morning: "Passage of the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act reverses a bad U.S. Supreme Court decision that made it impossible to win pay descrimination cases that were filed after 180 days of the pay being set--an important fix to a critical problem, ... The woman behind the Fair Pay Act is in town today—and speaking at the Westin at noon, where tickets can be purchased at the door. Happily, this gives me yet another opportunity to say that Lilly Ledbetter, hero of the fight against pay discrimination, also happens to have the best voice in politics. Charlie Rangel, who we've been hearing a lot from of late, is a close second—the former Ways and Means Committee Chairman always sounds like he's...
