Linton Brooks is Under Secretary of Energy for Nuclear Security. According to whitehouse.gov: Ambassador Linton F. Brooks was sworn in as the administrator of the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) and the undersecretary of energy for nuclear security on May 16, 2003. Brooks previously served as the deputy administrator for nuclear nonproliferation. Last July, President Bush named him acting administrator when the first NNSA administrator, John Gordon, took an assignment at the National Security Council. The President nominated Brooks to be administrator on February 4, 2003, and he was confirmed by the Senate on May 1. Prior to joining NNSA, Brooks was the vice president and assistant to the president for policy analysis at the Center for Naval Analyses (CNA), a federally funded research and development center located in Alexandria, Virginia. His extensive government experience includes service as the assistant director of the Arms Control and Disarmament Agency, chief U.S. negotiator for the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (where he earned the title of ambassador), director of arms control for the National Security Council, and a number of Navy and Defense Department assignments. “I am honored for the trust shown by the President and Secretary Abraham,” Brooks said. “We have an outstanding group of people working for NNSA and in our nuclear weapons complex, and there is much to do. I look forward to my continuing work with our nonproliferation and stockpile stewardship programs that promote U.S. national security.” NNSA is a semi-autonomous agency of the Department of Energy. It enhances U.S. national security through the military application of nuclear energy, maintains the U.S. nuclear weapons stockpile, promotes international nuclear non-proliferation and safety, reduces global danger from weapons of mass destruction, provides the U.S. Navy with safe and effective nuclear propulsion, and oversees national laboratories to maintain U.S. leadership in science and technology.

The Obama administration said Wednesday that a draft accord on shipping Iran's nuclear fuel abroad is a "very positive step," expecting the document to be approved here by the end of the week. In Vienna, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Wednesday handed Iran, Russia, the United States and France a draft for approval by then that could greatly ease tensions over Tehran's nuclear drive. Russia, France and Washington are pushing Iran to move forward an agreement -- reached in principle on October 1 -- to ship out most of its stockpile of low-enriched uranium for further processing by another country. "We greatly appreciate ... Read Full Story

The State Department's intelligence bureau has concluded that Iran will not be technically capable of producing weapons grade uranium for nuclear weapons before 2013, the US intelligence director has told Congress. The assessment by the State Department's Bureau of Intelligence and Research was included in written responses to questions submitted to Congress by the Director of National Intelligence Dennis Blair. Even though Iran has made significant progress in enriching uranium, the State Department bureau "continues to assess it is unlikely that Iran will have the technical capability to produce HEU (highly enriched uranium) before 2013," Blair said. In his earlier testimony to Congress, Blair ... Read Full Story

The Energy Department reports it has removed the last remaining bomb-grade uranium from Romania as part of an international nuclear nonproliferation program. Authorities removed 118 pounds of highly enriched uranium from two research reactors in Romania and flown to Russia for secure storage. The shipments were organized by the department's National Nuclear Security Administration. Russia had provided the uranium years ago. All the highly enriched U.S. uranium was removed from the country last year. The program is part of a broader worldwide effort to move bomb-grade uranium away from research reactors to more secure locations. More than 100 research reactors across the globe still ... EUROPA NEWSWIRE. Photo by Pete Souza. WASHINGTON- Iran's leaders must come clean with the international community about evidence that Iran has been secretly constructing another nuclear-fuel processing plant, President Barack Obama said Sept. 27 in his weekly address. "This week, we joined with the United Kingdom and France in presenting evidence that Iran has been building a secret nuclear facility to enrich uranium," Obama said in his address. "This is a serious challenge to the global nonproliferation regime, and continues a disturbing pattern of Iranian evasion." Revelations about Iran's actions, Obama said, make more urgent the slated Oct. 1 negotiations in Geneva between Iran ... Read Full Story

A U.S. Department of Energy spokeswoman says an agreement has been reached with Utah Gov. Gary Herbert to temporarily store low-level radioactive waste from South Carolina before permanently disposing of it. State regulators say they need more time to determine whether depleted uranium can safely be disposed of at a private facility in Utah's west desert. Depleted uranium is different from other waste because it becomes more radioactive over...
