After coming in fourth in last month’s general election for the Salem School committee, linguistics professor and mother Lisa Lavoie was selected as the committee’s newest member in a joint session of the School Committee and City Council Monday night.
SALEM — Lisa Lavoie, the top runner-up for School Committee in the November city election, got a second chance last night and made the most of it.
A joint meeting of the City Council and School Committee gave Lavoie nine of its 17 votes, the majority she needed to fill a school board vacancy.
City leaders have chosen Lisa Lavoie to fill the upcoming vacancy on the School Committee.
Lavoie ran for School Committee this fall and was the first runner-up in the election, finishing just 375 votes behind veteran School Committeeman Jim Fleming, who won the third and last seat.
The new vacancy is being created by the departure of Kevin Carr, who was elected to the City Council.
