100 years of Socialism in Loja 1909 - 2009 The exhibition now at the Posito in Loja traces the origins of the Socialist movement in Loja since its beginning in 1901 until the present day. Of particular interest is the display showing the history of the Alcalde of Loja during the period 1931 until 1936. This period of intensive debate and political idealism covers the ending of the dictatorship of Primo de Rivera, the establishment of the Spanish republic and the outbreak of the civil war. And it is on this sad note that the Alcalde de Loja lost his life, when in 1936 ... Read Full Story

With just a short few hours to go before the Festival begins, tension mounts in this small hillside town where a cultural celebration of one sort or another is rapidly becoming as common a place as the closure of an immobilaria down on the costa-del-corrupcion. Not that I´m taking a dig at coastal life, far from it. As an ex-coastal dweller I can appreciate as much as anyone the better climate, the open spaces, the rip-off bars, paltry tapas and excessive presence of sock and sandal wearing retirees staggering out of there mobile homes illegally parked on the beach. Who wouldn't want to live ... Read Full Story
