Community gardens exist in many local towns. This is a place for gardeners to share general gardening tips and for the community gardening community to share best practices about ways to manage community gardens.
Carved vegetation holds no appeal for me. Topiary shaped like animals are interesting but not particularly fascinating. I have never been seriously tempted to spend time and effort developing a green horse, elephant, or even chicken shaped conifer.
About a month ago I viewed a filmed documentary that made me sit up and take notice. It was the story of Pearl Fryar from Bishopville, South Carolina. He liked plants, but was uneducated in the science of their care. He wanted his yard to be... Read Full Story
Garden Pictures on a Rainy Day On days like this when it's rainy out and I get to feeling blue, there's no better medicine for me than to browse through pictures of the garden taken in the past. I guess I live for playing in the garden. I started planning for next Spring when the leaves began to fall in Autumn. I'm working on building a bigger vegetable garden every year. We started canning [pictures taken] and drying [pictures taken] some of our own vegetables this year. Actually, we would... Read Full Story
Having been disappointed with the way that Spurs played, decided not to mention anymore about the game. So I wont. Awoke yesterday morning to an overcast day, we decided to work on the garden again, there is much to do this time of year with the one hectare of land. It is very warm and with no sunshine or wind made it difficult to get on with any motivation, but we plodded on and most of the landscaped garden is now finished, we also have one of the vegetable plots ready for planting. In several Montreal neighborhoods, people have begun to plant flowers around the street trees. Looks very nice, and probably is good for the tree, since a wilting flower is often more successful in crying out for water than a tree is. But as far as I know, this kitschy little plot near Jean Talon Market is unique. It grew over the last couple of years, nurtured by the people who were featured in last week's post, I think, as it is just outside their doorstep. I'd also guess that passerbys... Read Full Story
Hello, When I took to this gardening racket last June I entertained high hopes of attracting all sorts of wildlife to my corner of the city centre. Nothing too large like an elephant which would be more hassle than it's worth. No offence to elephants I'm a big fan but face it a couple of them charging around the city would be mayhem. I was hoping for something more like birds, bees and butterflies. I'm pleased to say the bee count is high -good old bees! You have to hand it to the bees they... Read Full Story
When I saw what the folks at the day care which my kids attended had done to the patch of ground in front of the entrance, I was delighted. While a great deal of effort has gone into making the Garderie Querbes a well-equipped centre for early childhood education inside, the outside has languished. Every couple of years a few parents of children in the day care or in the school in which it’s located, get together to do something about a garden. Last year the space in front of the school... Hello, I or rather my garden has been the victim of crime. I hopped downstairs this morning to find a large bin bag dumped on the path which was bad enough. It was only as I got closer I noticed a bag of broadsheet newspapers deliberately and maliciously dumped on a selection of helpless seedlings. Broadsheet newspapers- if even the educated classes have descended into barbarism what hope is left? Sadly that wasn't the worst of it the evil swine had also ripped out a beautiful fuchsia in full... Read Full Story
