He was one of the most versatile and powerful character actors of the early cinema. He is best remembered for his characterizations of tortured, often grotesque and afflicted characters, and his groundbreaking artistry with film makeup.

Some people may not consider The Phantom of the Opera a Halloween horror movie (especially if they have only seen the 2004 version.) However, back in 1925, Lon Chaney made a slient version of Phantom of the Opera and if this isn't a scarry Halloween monster then I don't know what is. The tag line when this movie was released was, "The greatest horror film of modern cinema!"
