A community portal about Lou Piniella with blogs, videos, and photos. According to Wikipedia.org: Louis Victor Piniella is a Cuban-American former left fielder in Major League Baseball and the current manager of the Chicago Cubs. His nickname, "Sweet Lou," has two meanings, his sweet swing as a hitter for the New York Yankees for whom he batted.295, and, facetiously, to describe his demeanor as a manager.

Chicago's Derrek Lee was scheduled to spend Friday night's game against the Giants receiving treatment for neck spasms, the result of a congratulatory pat on the helmet from pitcher Angel Guzman the previous night. "It's just something that happened," Cubs' manager Lou Piniella said before the game. "Guzman, or whoever it was, was trying to compliment him for stealing the base and scoring a run. I was told it was Guzman, I don't know for sure. I guess they went to the video tape. I just shook his hand." Lee drew a leadoff walk in the ninth inning Thursday night from Giants closer Brian ... Cory Sullivan homered and made a diving catch in left field to help the New York Mets, boosted by Bobby Parnell's stellar start, beat the Chicago Cubs 6-2 on Friday night. Pinch-hitter Fernando Tatis came through with a tiebreaking single that triggered a five-run eighth inning. Sullivan had an RBI single during the outburst and Omir Santos added a two-run single. Parnell pitched seven shutout innings, striking out seven in the best start of his brief career. The rookie allowed five hits and escaped a bases-loaded, none-out jam in the seventh. It was an encouraging performance for the fourth-place Mets, auditioning Parnell for a ... Read Full Story

Beleaguered Chicago Cubs closer Kevin Gregg was demoted Tuesday, and replaced by right-hander Carlos Marmol. Manager Lou Piniella disclosed the move Tuesday, a day after Gregg blew another save in a 4-1 loss to San Diego. Marmol was chosen to take over the closer role, although Piniella said he also considered left-hander John Grabow and right-hander Angel Guzman. Marmol has more experience in the closer's role than the others. Gregg has blown three of his last five save chances, including Monday night's loss to the Padres when rookie Kyle Blanks hit a three-run homer in the ninth to cap a four-run inning. It was ... Chicago Cubs left fielder Alfonso Soriano is out indefinitely with a sore left knee. Cubs manager Lou Piniella says the team plans to hold Soriano out of the lineup for a while, giving him time to rest and treat his ailing knee. Piniella says at some point the club will revisit the situation, but he's not sure when. Asked whether Soriano could miss the rest of the season, Piniella said he wasn't ready to go that far. The Cubs were six games behind NL wild-card leader Colorado going into Friday night's game against the New York Mets. Trying to play through the injury, Soriano ... Read Full Story

Chicago Cubs ace Carlos Zambrano and slugger Amaris Ramirez left Saturday's game against Florida with injuries, but neither is believed to be serious. Zambrano complained of a stiff back and departed after three innings with the Cubs leading 6-2. Ramirez was hit by a pitch in the left forearm in the 10th inning and left the game dizzy from the pain. The Cubs won 9-8 in 10 innings. Manager Lou Piniella said Zambrano is expected to make his next start as scheduled, and Ramirez might be able to play Sunday. Zambrano said he has experienced occasional back trouble throughout his career, but this was ... Read Full Story

Professional wrestling personality/legend/icon Captain Lou Albano passed away from natural causes last week at the age 76.  Yes, it’s possible for professional wrestlers to live well into their 70’s and pass from natural causes.  Though I’m sure no one ever had any questions about what Lou put into his body. When I heard of the Captain’s passing my immediate thought was how can I honor one of my childhood favorites here at Bugs & Cranks. The...

As if it wasn't a forgone conclusion already, Lou Piniella seemed to close the door on any possibility of Milton Bradley returning to the Cubs next year. On ESPN 1000's "Waddle and Silvy" show today, Piniella talked about next year's team. It seems clear that Bradley is not in the plans. "We needed a big bat to put in the middle part of our lineup, and we thought Milton would be the one. And it just didn't work out, for whatever reason. So we...
