Witness 'A Girl Cut in Two'

Because we don't see every foreign language film here in the U.S. - generally speaking, we only get the ones distributors feel have a shot at gaining at least a modest American acceptance - I first became aware of the lovely French actress Ludivine Sagnier in the delicious, underrated musical 8 Women back in 2002, even though her career was over a decade old at that point.

Most Americans who know Sagnier know her from her skin-baring turn in the mystery, Swimming Pool, which followed the next year. Like most European actors, even the really good ones, Sagnier has not had tremendous success in the states since then, unless you count late night downloads of scenes from Swimming Pool off Mr. Skin.

But IFC Films is releasing A Girl Cut in Two this month, over 12 months after its theatrical run overseas. Better late than never, I guess. And no, it's not about a magician's assistant but rather a woman who, as the song says, is torn between two lovers, acting like a fool. IFC's official stance is that A Girl Cut in Two is a "wickedly humorous and dangerously erotic thriller." Sounds fun. I don't think it's getting much of a push theatrically here, though, which is a shame, because I'd buy just about anything this poster is selling.

I should mention that A Girl Cut in Two is the latest film from director Claude Chabrol, who has been at this game for about half a century and before that, he was a critic for Cahiers du Cinema, the influential French film journal that gave rise to the auteur theory. Again, a lot of mainstream American audiences have never seen his work, but he's a director worth investigating if you're up to it.

Here's the trailer for the film, which should tell you what it's all about: Sex, violence, and a hot blonde. That's usually a recipe for success.

I'll try to track down some more concrete release dates for the film next week, so hang tight.
