According to Wikipedia.org: Lynyrd Skynyrd is a U.S. Southern rock band, described by All Music Guide's Stephen Thomas Erlewine as "the definitive Southern rock band, fusing the overdriven power of blues-rock with a rebellious, Southern image and a hard rock swagger." The band reached prominence during the 1970s under the leadership of vocalist and primary songwriter Ronnie Van Zant until he died, along with several other members of the band, in a plane crash in 1977.

In the studio, looking at the album cover, I was amazed, Jacksonville, Florida was becoming a mecca for Southern Rock. Originating from the same city as the most well-known act in the Southern rock genre, Lynyrd Skynyrd. I could just see hundreds of PR men in Jacksonville getting hammered and running around looking for the next BIG thing. In rides Molly Hatchet circa 1971, named for a legendary Southern prostitute who supposedly mutilated and decapitated her clients. Jacksonville News is reporting that the long-time keyboard player for Lynyrd Skynyrd has died. Billy Powell was 56. Billy Powell, a longtime keyboard player for Lynyrd Skynyrd who survived the band’s 1977 plane crash, died at his Orange Park condo early this morning, according to police. Orange Park Police Chief James Boivin said Powell called 911 from his condo in Club Continental and was pronounced dead at 1:52 a.m. after rescue crews performed CPR on him. Billy Powell called 911 Tuesday night complaining of chest pains. When paramedics and police arrived, they found him unresponsive. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Paramedics say his death was related to heart problems, which he had been seeing a cardiologist for. Powell which has had an interesting run with the group Lynyrd Skynyrd, survived the plane crash of 1977 in Mississippi which killed Ronnie Van Zant and 5 others. Powell was severely injured in the crash. Powell joined the original Skynyrd band in 1972, but he worked for the Jacksonville, Florida-based band for several years before that as a crew member.
