A community portal about Lynyrd Skynyrd with blogs, videos, and photos. According to Wikipedia.org: Lynyrd Skynyrd is a U.S. Southern rock band, described by All Music Guide's Stephen Thomas Erlewine as "the definitive Southern rock band, fusing the overdriven power of blues-rock with a rebellious, Southern image and a hard rock swagger." The band reached prominence during the 1970s under the leadership of vocalist and primary songwriter Ronnie Van Zant until he died, along with several other members of the band, in a plane crash in 1977.

Jacksonville News is reporting that the long-time keyboard player for Lynyrd Skynyrd has died. Billy Powell was 56. Billy Powell, a longtime keyboard player for Lynyrd Skynyrd who survived the band’s 1977 plane crash, died at his Orange Park condo early this morning, according to police. Lynyrd Skynyrd keyboardist Billy Powell dies at 56

Billy Powell called 911 Tuesday night complaining of chest pains. When paramedics and police arrived, they found him unresponsive. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Paramedics say his death was related to heart problems, which he had been seeing a cardiologist for. Powell which has had an interesting run with the group Lynyrd Skynyrd, survived the plane crash of 1977 in Mississippi which killed Ronnie Van Zant and 5 others. The legendary keyboardist for Lynyrd Skynyrd died today (Jan. 29, 2009) in his condo in Jacksonville, Florida. Billy called 911 at about 12:55 a.m. Wednesday saying he was having trouble breathing. Rescue crews performed CPR, but he was pronounced dead at 1:52 a.m., said Orange Park Police Lt. Mark Cornett. Legendary keyboardist of this band you may have heard of called Lynyrd Skynyrd, was pronounced dead at 1:52 a.m. today. Billy had a history of heart problems and it would seem like heart complications were the cause of his death.
