Lysette Anthony:My Son's Recovery is Miraculous
As actress Lysette Anthony waved goodbye to her five-year-old son outside his school gates, her eyes filled with tears. Of course, every child's first day in education is a pivotal moment, but for the actress, it was particularly poignant.Last January, her little boy Jimi was diagnosed with juvenile arthritis - a crippling inflammation of the joints that affects one in a thousand children in Britain.
It leads to irregular bone growth and a stiffness in the limbs that can, if left untreated, render sufferers wheelchair-bound.
To combat his bleak prognosis, he was prescribed steroids and chemotherapy that, while helping to ease the swelling in his arms and legs, left him paranoid, hyperactive and prone to hysterical outbursts.

And while they did improve his mobility, it wasn't until last September, when Jimi underwent an operation under general anaesthetic to inject steroids into his ankles, that he really began to fight his way back to health.
Lysette - a television and stage actress best known for her roles in Woody Allen's Oscar-nominated 1992 film Husbands And Wives and the Eighties BBC sitcom Three Up, Two Down - says the difference couldn't be more dramatic.
'The only word I can use to describe his recovery is miraculous,' she says.

'I put off the operation for eight months because it was a frightening choice to make.
But as soon as Jimi came round he was bouncing around like any normal little boy.
'I sobbed for two days before he started school recently.

But he loves it and we are so much happier as a family now.'
