MARS
A brief synopsis of the daily activities of the planet Mars, NASA, and the exporation of the universe.
The Martian landscape or alien art?
NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) has been capturing images of the red planet since 2006, surveying its surface from 187 miles up in a search for evidence that water may once have been sufficiently abundant to support life.
On board the Orbiter is HiRise, a University of Arizona-engineered precision camera that can capture images at 20,000 x 40,000 pixels, with a resolution of less than one metre per pixel. HiRise has been instrumental in supporting the Orbiter's mission, but perhaps just as importantly, it has contributed to an ever-growing collection of alien artworks.
These amazing images are intriguing not just because they provide us with a new understanding of the Martian landscape, they are also beautiful abstract artworks in their own right.
