A community portal about Madagascar with blogs, videos, and photos. According to Wikipedia.org: Madagascar or Malagasy Republic, is an island nation in the Indian Ocean, off the southeastern coast of Africa. The main island, also called Madagascar, is the fourth largest island in the world, and is home to five percent of the world's plant and animal species, (more than 80 percent of which are indigenous to Madagascar.) Most notable are the lemur infraorder of primates, the carnivorous fossa, three endemic bird families and six endemic baobab species. The adjective for Madagascar is Malagasy (pronounced "mal-la-gas-ee" or "mal-a-gash"), and the official national language is the Malagasy language.
Madagascar is the world's fourth largest island, and is recognized as one of the world's top ten hotspots for biodiversity. It is estimated that there are between 8,000- 12,000 plant species on the island and, of these, 80% or more are endemic. This, combined with the fact that the island's natural vegetation is at risk due to high levels of deforestation, has made Madagascar of paramount importance to the work of RBG Kew.
RBG Kew has been active in Madagascar for over 17 years...

In one of the most recent seizures, a single Nigerian man was arrested with 300 tortoises in his possession! Most smuggled tortoises find their way into the exotic pet trade, selling for as much as $10,000. However, experts believe that the rarest species, the ploughshare tortoise (pictured here), could be extinct within 10 years...

A really impressive little story today, about how the Madagascan government and its people have 'got it right' in terms of improving public health. For a start, the island nation has the lowest rate of HIV infection in sub-Saharan Africa, due in large part to early and significant investment in sex education, condom promotion, HIV testing and targeting of high-risk groups. But it doesn't stop there. The government and its partners have also rolled out comprehensive programmes in malaria...

It's been a strange ride for singer Rachel Taylor Brown: a nervous breakdown, eight years of solitude living as a hermit, an endless struggle with both loving and hating humanity.

A government decision to ban rice exports to cushion Madagascar against spiralling global food prices will bring temporary relief, but observers say the island's goal of food self-sufficiency will remain a pipedream unless underlying problems are dealt with.
