RAMALLAH, West Bank (Reuters) - Younger Palestinian leaders were in no rush on Friday to step into the shoes of President Mahmoud Abbas after he said he did not want to run for re-election in January. Making clear Abbas' Fatah movement is, so far, unwilling to take the 74-year-old president at his word, none of the men seen as potential successors threw his hat into the ring after Abbas's announcement on Thursday. Israel and the United States were also careful not to take his decision as irrevocable. They rely on Abbas as their partner in the diplomatic drive for a Middle East peace treaty. ... Read Full Story
DAMASCUS (Reuters) - Hamas leader Khaled Meshaal urged Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Friday to stop seeking compromise with Israel but offered him an olive branch, saying Palestinians must end their divisions. Sounding conciliatory after raising the political ante against Abbas following his call for national elections last month, Meshaal said the Islamist group Hamas "stretches its hand" to Abbas's Fatah faction to end divisions between the two sides undermining the Palestinian cause. "Courage dictates that we, as leaders of the Palestinians, be frank with our people and evaluate what compromise has brought us, decide together to suspend or freeze the political settlement process ... Mahmud Abbas has been a "true partner" of the United States, the White House said Thursday, after the Palestinian president announced he would not seek re-election in January. "We have tremendous respect for president Abbas, he has been an important and historic leader for the Palestinian people and a true partner for the United States," said White House spokesman Robert Gibbs. Palestinian officials said Abbas's decision was motivated by his disappointment in US efforts to halt Israeli settlement construction, which he had said must happen before the resumption of peace talks. Abbas's frustration was said to have peaked when US Secretary of State Hillary ... Read Full Story

Aides say Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has told political allies he won't run in January elections. They say he's going to deliver a speech later Thursday explaining that he is frustrated by the impasse in peacemaking with the Israelis. The two aides spoke on condition of anonymity because Abbas has not officially announced his intentions. Abbas has threatened in the past not to run, and it was not immediately clear whether he could be persuaded to change his mind. The aides said Abbas received calls earlier Thursday from Israel's president and defense minister, the president of Egypt and the king of Jordan, all asking ... Read Full Story

Mahmoud Abbas (born March 26, 1935), commonly known by the kunya or nom de guerre Abu Mazen, was elected President of the Palestinian National Authority (PNA) on January 9, 2005, and took office on January 15, 2005.

Abbas is a leading politician in Fatah. He served as the first Prime Minister of the Palestinian Authority from March to October 2003 when he resigned citing lack of support from Israel and the United States as well as "internal incitement" against his government.  Before being named Prime Minister, Abbas led the PLO's Negotiations Affairs Department. He has served as Chairman of the PLO Executive Committee since November 11, 2004, after Yasser Arafat's death. With Hamas now in control of the Palestinian Authority, Abbas is frequently portrayed as the face of Palestinian moderation.
