Police arrested 109 people during opposition protests on the sidelines of an official demonstration marking three decades since the seizure of the US embassy, Tehran's police chief said on Saturday. "A hundred and nine people were arrested. Forty-seven were released on bail and 62 are in prison and their files are with the judicial authorities," General Azizollah Rajabzadeh was quoted as saying by the Mehr news agency. TEHRAN (Reuters) - Iranian security forces arrested an Agence France Presse reporter covering Wednesday's rally marking the anniversary of seizure of the U.S. embassy, the agency said on Thursday. Foreign media have been banned from covering street protests since the demonstrations over the disputed June presidential vote, which the opposition says was rigged to secure President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's re-election. Iranian police fired teargas during clashes with opposition supporters trying to stage a demonstration in central Tehran on Wednesday and made several arrests, witnesses said. The clashes took place in central Tehran's Haft-e-Tir square where groups of opposition supporters had gathered for a protest, even as thousands of Iranians were staging an anti-American rally outside the closed US embassy to mark the 30th anniversary of the storming of the compound by Islamist students. The United States hopes that violence doesn't spread in Iran, the White House said Wednesday, after riot police and opposition protestors clashed in central Tehran.
