The MLB is the highest level a player can reach in professional baseball. More specifically, MLB refers to the organization that operates North American professional baseball's two major leagues, the National League and the American League. On an organizational level, MLB effectively operates as a single "league," and as such it constitutes one of the major professional sports leagues in North America. As we continue to profile the 2009 postseason award winners for their 2010 fantasy baseball prospectus, it’s time to examine next season outlook for NL Cy Young winner Tim Lincecum. “The Freak” managed to win his second consecutive Cy Young award despite getting the second highest amount of first place votes. Cardinals starters Chris Carpenter and Adam Wainwright likely split many votes and caused themselves to finish second and third, respectively. Wainwright got 12 first place votes (1 more than Lincecum) but wasn’t able to take the award. In 2009, Lincecum finished the year 15-7 with a 2.48 ERA, 261 strikeouts, and a 1.05 ... Read Full Story

This is an actual press release from the Mets : FLUSHING, N.Y. -- The New York Mets today announced plans to expand the presence of club history at Citi Field next season in a variety of ways including renaming areas of the ballpark after Casey Stengel, Gil Hodges, Tom Seaver and William A. Shea. The Mets also have re-formed the Mets Hall of Fame Committee, and will increase the number of visuals commemorating great players and moments both inside and outside the ballpark. The Mets previously announced a 2010 opening of the Mets Hall of Fame & Museum at Citi Field. RENAMING OF AREAS ... Read Full Story

The official start to the Hot Stove was at 12:01 yesterday morning when free agents were able to sign with any team they choose. The free agent class for this season appears to be weak and with the economy being the way it is I don't think teams will be rushing to sign anyone and these players may just have to take some deals quick otherwise risk being out there in January without a job much like last year. I am going to start off with the New York Mets since they have many holes to fill and a lot of work to do. ... Read Full Story

It’s about time. Shelley Duncan has tore up the Yankees farm system for the last six years, and has hardly gotten a chance at the major league level. Now, the news is he has been outrighted to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre , which is what the Yankees did with him last year. If he clears waivers, he has the option this time around to reject the assignment. “I’ll wait and see,” Duncan said. “I might clear on Monday or something, and if do, then I’ll become a free agent.” Hopefully, a National League team will find him and he will tear it up over there. I don’t ... Read Full Story

The free agent period starts today and the Orioles based on their results last season need all the help they can get. After 11 losing seasons and finishing in the second division (again), I'd be curious to see what the team does on the open market. It's safe to assume the Orioles won't get John Lackey (he's going to get paid and go to a contender), nor Jason Bay or Matt Holliday, but they'll have their pick of the second and third tier free agents. It's widely assumed that Baltimore will try upgrade one of the corners -- first or third, or perhaps both ... Read Full Story

Chrism flames tied through my ears Yes, my guard stood hard when Baseball Abstract threats Orioles broadcaster Buck Martinez, a former big league catcher, said: “Joe might be the best player in the game. We had a debate on the radio the other day between Mauer and Pujols. And we love Pujols, but to have a catcher do what [Mauer] does, it gives you so many more options.” That logic also speaks to Derek Jeter’s value for the Yankees. Jeter...

The National League MVP will be announced this week, and it will undoubtedly be handed to Albert Pujols. With this year's race all but locked up, I wanted to take a look at a player who I consider to be the front-runner for MVP in 2010.  At 25 years old, Matt Kemp has already put up impressive numbers that rank up there with some of the elite names in baseball history.  He is just one of 17 outfielders in the integration era—a list that...

Tim’s done it again. Tim Lincecum of the San Francisco Giants won his second consecutive National League Cy Young Award. Lincecum edged out the pair of St. Louis Cardinals aces, Adam Wainwright and Chris Carpenter. He becomes the first pitcher to repeat as the winner since Randy Johnson did so with the Diamondbacks four times from 1999-2002. It makes sense that the number one pitcher of 2008 won again, as while Lincecum’s wins total was...

There are only two more awards to be awarded before the books on the 2009 MLB season can be officially closed – one of which is the National League Most Valuable Player. Last year’s winner, Albert Pujols of the St. Louis Cardinals, looks poised to repeat. If he wins, it will be his third NL MVP nod, as he also took home the hardware in 2005 after knocking off Barry Bonds and his four consecutive titles. What makes him the most obvious...

San Francisco Giants ace Tim Lincecum won the NL Cy Young Award on Thursday for the second consecutive season to become the first repeat winner since Randy Johnson, emerging from one of the tightest votes in the history of the honor. The wiry right-hander, nicknamed "The Freak" for his giant stride, led the NL with 261 strikeouts and tied for the league lead with four complete games and two shutouts.
