"Fountain," readymade art by Marcel Duchamp, 1917. Photograph by Alfred Stieglitz. I have developed a tendency to awaken early of late. When this happens, I may get up and read, or write, or watch the special features on a DVD. Sometime I'll have to tell you what happened to the Time Machine after the movie was completed in 1960. Other times I may just lie abed and ponder the Big Questions, such as why does the phrase, "early of late," used so cleverly in the opening sentence of this post, make sense, but the phrase "late of early" does not? Today, I awoke with ... Read Full Story

Private collection, courtesy of Francis M. Naumann Fine Art “ Inventing Marcel Duchamp: The Dynamics of Portraiture ” opens this Friday, March 27, at the National Portrait Gallery . The exhibition casts new light upon Marcel Duchamp (1887–1968), one of the most influential artists of the recent past. Showcasing approximately 100 never-before-assembled portraits and self-portraits of Duchamp, the show demonstrates that the artist harnessed the power of portraiture and self-portraiture both to secure his reputation as an iconoclast and to establish himself as a major figure in the art world. The exhibition includes works by his contemporaries Man Ray, Alfred Stieglitz, Francis Picabia, and ... Read Full Story

Michael Jackson was gifted with a talent for dance amply illustrated by his famous moonwalk dance routine inspired both by urban life and late French master of mime Marcel Marceau. "There was a mutual admiration between Michael Jackson and Marcel Marceau," Elena Serra, who worked with the king of mime for 20 years, told AFP. "Marceau said of Michael Jackson that he was a born mime artist, which was also what he'd said of Charlie Chaplin, because of his easy physical movement, his ability to decompose movements, his understanding. I think Marceau was impressed by him." Marceau, who died aged 84 in 2007 and ... Read Full Story
PARIS (Reuters) - A planned sale of costumes, books, art and a battered old hat left by France's Marcel Marceau, one of the world's most famous mime artists, has caused an uproar among fans fighting to keep his legacy intact. A Paris court ordered the auction to pay off debts left by Marceau, who pumped his money into theater productions and went bankrupt before he died in 2007 aged 84. But Marceau had wanted the French state to preserve his belongings and transform his house into a cultural space for troupes from all over the world, said his former assistant, Valerie Bochenek. I'M THINKING ALOUD, or rather my fingers are, mulling over what on earth I'm going to say for half an hour this evening about my Duchamp opera. Marcel Duchamp worked on his Large Glass, La Mariée mise à nu par ses célibataires, même, for twelve or fourteen years, definitively abandoning the project in 1923. It's two things: 1) a painting on glass, say two meters high, painted in mixed media (oil paint, lead foil, lead wire, dust, varnish) on...

Between 1920 and 1959, Croydon Aerodrome was the launch pad for various airborne adventures, including Amy Johnson's 1930 flight from from Croydon to Australia (the first woman to make this flight). Most of the site has been redeveloped, but there are still traces of it.Anarchist Ian Bone is evidently a fan and has a couple of good photos of a recent event there. In 1938 another sometime anarchist (?*) - the artist Marcel Duchamp - visited...
