March Madness NCAA Tournament
March Madness fans, rejoice. A zine dedicated to the NCAA tournament. Photos, news, smack talk, you name it. Gotta love college hoops.
Davidson's Magic Run Continues into Elite 8
Even the upset ended as a laugher, but what a performance it was. Davidson continued their Cinderella run through the tournament by handling third-seeded Wisconsin 73-56. After ending the first half tied, Stephen Curry began his now-patented second half surge by outscoring the Badgers by himself, 22-20 and leading the Wildcats. Curry has scored 103 points in the tournament, and is hands down the Most Outstanding Player after three rounds. The rest of the day featured blowouts by the higher seeded teams that left viewers salivating over the collisions in the next round more than enjoying the final day of the round of 16.
The Stanford Texas match was a game of contrast, with the Cardinal's big 7 footers in Brook and Robin Lopez going against the Longhorns quick guard combo of D.J. Augustin and A.J. Abrams. Neither team had an answer for the other's strength. Brook scored at will against the small Texas team, wracking up 26 points to go along with ten boards. But it was Texas' speed that killed Stanford. Augustin scored 23 and handed out 6 assists as he repeatedly gashed the Cardinal defense with his drives. Stanford closed the deficit to one with 13 minutes to go, but after that it was all Texas.
In the evening games the top seeds exploded out of the gate and showed their athletic superiority in beating up their lower-seeded opponents. Memphis, a chic pick to be the first one-seed to fall, immediately showed their superiority and built up such a lead that Michigan State's 16-0 run in the second half barely put them within shouting distance. Derrick Rose led the way with 27 points and 5 assists in only 26 minutes.
Kansas, the final one seed to play, wasted little time in putting down twelfth-seed Villanova. The Jayhawks established a 15-point cushion midway through the first half that they maintained throughout and ensured all the top seeds would be in the Elite 8 for only the fifth time since 1985.
Tomorrow the juggernauts face off for a spot in the Final Four in Louisville vs. North Carolina and UCLA vs. Xavier.
