March Madness NCAA Tournament
March Madness fans, rejoice. A zine dedicated to the NCAA tournament. Photos, news, smack talk, you name it. Gotta love college hoops.
Top Seeds All Advance to Historic Final Four
We'll it's happened. All four number one seeds advanced to the Final Four for the first time ever. And while some may complain it's less interesting without a Cinderella team, or even somewhat of an underdog, these were clearly the best teams in the country. The champions of Conference USA, the ACC, the Pac-10 and Big 12 are represented with a combined record of 143-9, making up the most competitive and highest-quality Final Four in recent memory. The tournament darling (10) Davidson took on (1) Kansas in the second game of the day. Davidson had beaten (2) Georgetown and (3) Wisconsin on their way to the Elite Eight, but the general consensus was they were outclassed by the top-seeded Kansas. But the Wildcats quickly showed this was not the case, going step-for-step with the Jayhawks behind a stout defense and 25 points from sophomore phenom Stephen Curry. Kansas' final total of 59 was tied for their lowest output of the season. With ten seconds left and Davidson down by two they had a chance to win on Richard's three point attempt, but his 25 shot hit off the backboard as time expired.
Kansas advances to play North Carolina, a team that looked near-unbeatable in their win over Louisville, while the Jayhawks had yet to be challenged until their game today.
The anticipated (1) Memphis (2) Texas game turned into a romp for the Tigers. The Longhorns were coming off a 20-point victory of the Cardinal and Memphis had struggled with free throw shooting, leading some to believe they were vulnerable to the upset. But Memphis lead the entire game and were never challenged. Leading the way were Chris Michael-Douglas, who scored 25, and freshman point guard Derrick Rose, who added 21 to go along with nine assists.
Memphis' athletic defense was able to stop the Longhorn's guards D.J. Augustin and A.J. Abrams, who had run roughshod over the Cardinal defense on Friday. The two combined for 33 points, but dished out only 6 assists while no other Longhorn broke double figures in scoring.
Memphis will play UCLA on Saturday. Each team has looked both vulnerable and unstoppable at times this tournament, and the outcome will likely depend on which version shows up.
Say what you will about the lack of upsets that lead to this historic Final Four, but the top talent represented in these final 3 games ensure this year's March Madness will go out with a bang.
