Today President Obama announced his plan to nominate 57-year-old Dr. Marcia McNutt as Director of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and Science Advisor to the Secretary. If confirmed by the Senate, Mcnutt will be the first woman to direct the agency, which was established in 1879. The San Jose Mercury reported: "It's an honor," McNutt said Thursday evening. The Senate confirmed Dr. Marcia McNutt as the new director of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). McNutt is an oceangoing geophysicist that was previously president and CEO of the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute.
