By now everyone knows how Marco Island City Council members deliberated in closed-door session on the touchy matter of where boaters should be allowed to moor. We also know, thanks to Florida open records laws that require transcripts of such meetings to be made public later, some members of council discussed strategies that may have contested the spirit, if not the letter, of those same public-access safeguards. Now, what to do?

The Marco Island Sail and Power Squadron (MISPS) has made it easy to obtain a Florida Boating Safety Education certificate and ID card. Course completion and receipt of this card also qualifies most boaters for substantial discounts on their boat insurance. Anyone 21 years and younger or with certain boating citations must have this card to legally operate a boat in Florida.

City Council will be prepared to go the distance for several hours Monday as they address parking tickets at homes and possible restaurant parking disparities, among several other somewhat controversial Marco Island topics. Council will begin with a work session at 2 p.m. Monday where formal votes on the issues will not be taken. After a break, they will return for a 5:30 p.m. meeting for formal action.
