The 31-year-old Lel, the 2003 and 2007 champion, was coming off victory in last month's Great North Half Marathon in England but a nagging injury began to bother him again, his manager said. "I am really excited to be returning to New York this year," the world record holder said in a statement issued by the organizers on Thursday. Defending men's champion Marilson Gomes dos Santos of Brazil was among five past winners who were announced Wednesday as competitors in this year's 40th New York Marathon. South Africa's Hendrick Ramaala, Kenyans Martin Lel and Paul Tergat, Latvia's Jelena Prokopcuka and Russia's Ludmila Petrova will also run in the November 1 race, officials announced.
