A beloved west-side community center is now in the hands of Salt Lake County.

The man who severely beat his ex-girlfriend’s puppy and recorded it on her voice mail pleaded guilty as part of a plea bargain Wednesday.
His lawyers say Anthony Richard Spidle is a changed man who now wants to do community service with animal rights groups and rejects domestic violence.

Utah’s only openly gay state senator, Democrat Scott McCoy, has told the Deseret News he is resigning.
“It’s just a work thing,” McCoy said Tuesday. “If I want to be a partner in my law firm and have a robust legal career, I have to be a lawyer rather than a politician.”
McCoy said his resignation will be effective as of Friday. He would have been up for reelection from his Salt Lake City district next year.

A man charged with punching a police officer during a Sept. 16 melee at a Salt Lake night spot entered into a plea bargain Tuesday after admitting the crime.
Arnold Pikula, 21, pleaded guilty to assault against a police officer, a class A misdemeanor. In exchange, 3rd District Judge Judith Atherton dismissed misdemeanor charges of sexual battery and interfering with a legal arrest. Pikula will be sentenced Jan. 22.

SANDY — The City Council unanimously agreed Tuesday to annex 28 properties near Dimple Dell Park into Sandy, despite protests from Salt Lake County.
The homes had been part of the proposed Granite Township, which is up for popular vote in November 2010.
The homes along Bell Canyon Road will now receive Sandy fire, water , police and garbage service. They will also pay Sandy property taxes.

A man died after a Saturday afternoon dirt bike crash at a popular motocross park near the Jordan River in northern Salt Lake County, authorities said.

Kahea Kaonohiokala Troy, 29, was arrested by Salt Lake police Tuesday for investigation of unlawful sexual activity with a minor and being a fugitive from justice.

Several snow-related traffic accidents rippled throughout Salt Lake County as flurries on the road led to sliding cars Sunday evening.
Utah Highway Patrol troopers said they expected a worse evening and were happy with only 12 accidents that occurred on Salt Lake County freeways as of 10 p.m. Davis County and Utah County each reported four accidents, all with minor to no injuries, said UHP Sgt. Ted Tingey.
