In re-evaluating the ground defense portion of the Can-ryu curriculum, it is important to think long and hard about the key tenets of our style to ensure that the core curriculum I propose fits with those tenets. I will review them here. 1. Simplicity. Our core curriculum is meant to be easy to learn. A student should be able to be able to learn a defensive technique in a way that is usable in less than 3 minutes. Martial Arts Ornaments are very popular, especially during this time of year.  As a parent of two 2nd degree black belts kids, I found it fun to commemorate each black belt test with a dated keepsake ornament.  The kids are so excited each year when they unwrap their ornaments to hang on the Christmas tree remembering the year the received their black belt. Martial Arts Gifts by Lora Severson Photography sells Martial Arts Ornaments featuring all belt rank colors. Collect each one as your martial artist achieves the rank to make a complete set at their black belt test. The Merry Kick-Mas Ornaments are ... Read Full Story

Today is my birthday. I am now 33 years old. I have now been doing martial arts for more than half my life. And this year has great expectations for me as such. I've essentially been asked to write a thesis about knife defense, covering the history of knives as weapons, different types of edged weapons that are used, how they are carried by civilians, the attack & concealment methods used ... The climactic scene in "Ong Bak 2: The Beginning," a fierce battle between the put-upon Tien (played by actor/director Tony Jaa) and an ever-expanding hive of willing yet incompetent ninjas, is such a brutal and beautiful explosion of choreography and kung-fu craziness that it qualifies as one of the best martial-arts fight scenes ever. Apparently, Jaa and co-director/writer Panna Rittikrai thought so, too, because they really didn't come up...
