Sammy the Banana Slug (University of California-Santa Cruz) The University of California-Santa Cruz is home to Sammy the Banana Slug. A banana slug is a slimy yellow mollusk found near the northern California coastal community of Santa Cruz. They adopted the slug as a mascot as a commentary on the overemphasis of athletics at many universities. Attempts to change to mascot to something else have all failed. Scrotie (Rhode Island School) Without a doubt, one of the strangest college sports mascots has to be Scrotie, the unofficial mascot of the Rhode Island School of Design. When you hear the word "mascot", most of us think about a sporting event and that funny big chicken walking around looking silly. A person wearing a mascot costume is seen in most stadiums during a game, but few of us have thought about what goes into designing and making that costume. Mascots, most sports teams have them. They're supposed to be fun representations of your team's chosen mascot that have come to life for you're amusement. They're supposed to be happy, dance around, make small children laugh and add a good hearted element to a sporting event. Whether they're attacking other mascots, fans, players or even referees, mascots have gone crazy enough times that there's video of it. Awesome, glorious video of grown people in stupid costumes attacking each other. The Oregon ... Read Full Story
