A Mavericks rogue wave injured scads of people on Saturday at the 2010 big-wave surf competition held in Northern California. According to the Santa Cruz Sentinal, the wave caused three people to go to the hospital, and as many as three dozen people were were either drenched or somehow effected by the 8-foot swell.

(sfbayaxis.com) According to reports, the giant wave injured 13 people after they were thrown about 40 feet back into rocks and metal partitions. Broken hands and legs were the most common injuries. "The whole place got demolished," said Dave Alexander, the beach marshall for the surfing event. Apparently the wave also knocked out scaffolding that held speakers to broadcast the event. The wave was reported to be about 5 foot 6 inches high, and came while the spectators were busy watching the competition. "We saw three big ones," spectator Sandy Hockin said. "We saw the speakers come down and kids flowing by."
